Sandra Sue Kiewlich Kalas Obituary

 It is with great regret that I found out Sandra died November 11, 2021. She was a great friend and a leader in genealogy research. She was a great teacher to me. RIP Sandra.


Obituary

Colebrook Twp. – Sandra S Kalas, age 81 died on November 11, 2021, at UH Geneva Hospital. She was born August 10, 1940, in Greene, Ohio, the daughter of Joseph and Ermyntrude (Garver) Kiewlich. Sandra was married to George Kalas on July 12th, 1975, the two lived in Colebrook township for their 46-year long marriage. Sandra graduated from Greene High School,  and from St. Vincent’s school of Nursing in Cleveland, and she earned a master’s degree. She taught nursing at Kent State University and taught emergency room nursing at Trumbull Memorial School of Nursing for many years. One of Sandra’s greatest loves was traveling. Sandra lived in Germany working as a nurse and traveling Europe with her brother, Leif who was stationed there in the Army. She traveled around the world with Chapman University, serving as a nurse onboard a cruise ship for a program called “Semester at Sea.” Sandra has been to all 50 states in the USA and all 88 counties in Ohio. She traveled abroad to over 100 countries, some highlighted trips included: South America, Israel, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, and United Arab Emirates. Sandra was also an active member of her community. She was on the Grand Valley Friends of the Library Committee. She served as president on the Greene Alumni association. She was a trustee for Colebrook township. She belonged to Colebrook United Methodist Church, where she loved to share her ideas about growing the congregation and improving the church. Her other hobbies included spending time with her, grandchildren and great grandnieces and nephews who brought her a lot of joy. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing extensive genealogy. Sandra had traced her family ancestors, back to the Mayflower pilgrims and before. Sandra was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband George Kalas, brother Leif Kiewlich, his children David and Daniel Kiewlich; sister Linda (Jim) Corbett, her children Adam (Sarah) Corbett, with Caleb, Clair, Cooper, Clark, and Eric (Tetiana) Corbett with Liev, Illyana,  Eliy. Children, George (Janet) Kalas, and Cathy (Buz) Strong. Grandchildren, Rachel (Josh), Joe (Colleen), Lisa (Aaron), Megan (Eric), and Marc, and great-grandson Michael.

A private service will be held for family and friends. Following Sandra’s wishes her ashes will be interned at Greene Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or contributions, Sandra’s family is asking to honor her legacy, by spreading light and love to others. Condolences may be made at painefuneralhome.com

Above is the original photo black and white, and the colorized version below. I remember going to the orchard to pick apples. That was such a good time. I can't imagine what the sweet scent of the orchard in bloom was like that day. This is a beautiful picture and it is even prettier colorized.

 Richard P. Simmons

A ceremony celebrating the life of Richard P. Simmons will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am, at First United Methodist Church North Blvd Baton Rouge. Interment will be at Louisiana National Cemetery. He graduated from Georgetown University in Washington D. C., retired from The State of Louisiana and Travelers Insurance as an insurance Adjuster. He was a charter member of Bocage Racquet Club, and taught ballroom dancing for BREC. In WWII her served with the U S Coast Guard, and the U S Army during Korea Conflict. He was a member of the Imperial Domain of the Golden Dragon. He is preceded in death by Frank M. and Hertha Baker Simmons, and a brother David Simmons. Survivors include his wife Marion D. Simmons, sister Ruth S. Brassett and her children, two stepsons Mark and Gary Jordan, their wives, children, and grandchildren. Arrangements with Church Funeral Services.
